Does closing on Saturday cost a dentist their Google Maps spot? 347 practices, Thursday against Saturday

The same 22 cities, searched Thursday and Saturday. In large metros, dentists closed Saturday fell a median of 3 places and open ones rose 4. In small cities the list barely moved.

Ultimate Analytics

Most dental practices do not open on Saturday, and many owners have been told what that costs them: Google favors a listing that is open when someone searches, so a practice closed on Saturday hands its map pack spot to whoever is open, every weekend. Yesterday we tested the Friday version of that warning and found it held. Saturday is the harder test, because on Saturday most of the list is closed. If almost every competitor is closed with you, is there anyone to hand the spot to?

On Saturday, October 10, 2026 we ran the same search, “dentist” plus the city, in the same 22 cities we searched on Thursday morning: 11 large metros and 11 small cities. We matched every practice to itself across the two days by name and map pin. 347 practices were in the top 20 both days, and 344 of them show hours.

The answer depends on where you practice. In the large metros, 90 of 205 listings with hours were open at the Saturday search (44 percent), and the list reshuffled toward them. In the small cities, 10 of 211 were open, and the Thursday list mostly held.

Your benchmark

If your practice is closed on Saturday, search “dentist” and your city on a weekday morning and again on Saturday, and write down your position both days. Then count how many of the 20 listings say Open. Here is how the matched practices moved:

Large metros Small cities
Closed all Saturday, matched both days 104 193
Median move down 3 down 1
Moved down 80 97
Moved up 10 38
Unchanged 14 58
Median position Thursday, then Saturday 7, then 11 10, then 10
Open at the search, matched both days 38 9
Median move for the open practices up 4 up 5

In a metro, being closed on Saturday cost the median practice 3 places, and 77 percent of closed practices moved down. The open practices rose a median of 4 places, and 31 of 38 moved up. The rank correlation between being closed and the change in position was rho 0.603 across 142 metro practices, a strong relationship.

In a small city, the closed practice lost a median of 1 place, and its median position was 10 on both days. 58 of 193 did not move at all. Only 9 matched small-city practices were open, and all 9 moved up, but there were too few of them to push the rest of the list far.

The top three tells the same story twice

On Thursday, 26 of the 33 metro top-three slots were held by practices whose listings say they are closed Saturday. On Saturday morning, 11 of the 33 were. Of those 26 practices, 10 kept a top-three spot. Practices that were open took two thirds of the metro top three while making up less than half of the list.

In the small cities, 32 of the 33 Thursday top-three slots belonged to practices closed Saturday, and 25 of them were still in the top three on Saturday. On Saturday, 29 of the 33 small-city top-three slots were held by closed practices. When nearly everyone is closed, Google does not hollow out the list. It keeps the weekday order.

Across all 22 cities, no Thursday top-three practice dropped out of the top 20 on Saturday, open or closed.

Who left and who arrived

The bottom of the metro list turned over. 73 metro listings from Thursday were gone from the top 20 on Saturday, and 70 of them list Saturday as closed. 73 listings replaced them, and 52 of those were open at the search. Several of the arrivals are built around weekend and urgent care: emergency dental offices, walk-in clinics and practices with Saturday hours into the afternoon. In the small cities, only 10 listings changed, all 10 of the leavers closed Saturday, and 1 of the 10 arrivals was open.

It is not reviews

Practices open on Saturday carry more reviews: a median of 797 on Thursday among the matched practices, against 487 for those closed. Reviews are the strongest ladder on this list (rank against reviews, rho -0.43 across 430 listings), so we split the matched practices into thirds by review count. Closed practices moved down in every third: a median of 1 place among those with fewer than 331 reviews, 2 among those with 331 up to 738, and 1 among those with 738 or more. Open practices rose a median of 5, 4 and 4. In the metros alone, the closed practices fell a median of 4, 3 and 2 places from the lowest third to the highest. On independents only, the pooled result is the same: 280 closed practices down a median of 1, 43 open practices up 4, rho 0.439.

What changed in verification

Verification did not change the finding. It did change the chain count. A host check found brands the first pass had treated as independents: emergency dental offices in Columbus, Nashville, Milwaukee and St. Louis with the same name pattern and the same site template on a separate domain per city, a dental brand with listings in Nashville and Atlanta, and four multi-location emergency and same-day brands. Tagging them moved chain locations from 30 to 42. None of the new tags fell in the matched groups, because those listings either first appeared on Saturday or show no hours, so the panel figures above are identical in both runs. We opened the sites of eight emergency-style listings before keeping them. Seven loaded, and each described a dental office offering same-day or emergency care at the listed address; the eighth did not load, and its listing carries a street address and 609 reviews, so it stays. 9 listings were excluded as not general dental practices: 6 oral surgery practices, 2 lead marketplace listings and 1 listing we could not verify.

We also checked the one thing a later search time could break. Thursday’s search ran at about 8 a.m. Central. Saturday’s ran just before noon Central, about three and a half hours later in the day. A practice that opened Saturday morning and closed before our search would read as closed while its hours say open. We found none: every one of the 100 listings with Saturday hours was still open at the search, so on this Saturday “closed at the search” and “closed all day” are the same group.

What to do with this

A Saturday closure costs metro practices visibility on Saturday morning, and the loss is larger than in small towns because nearly half the metro list is open and ready to take the spot. The practices that held their top-three place on Saturday mostly lived in small cities, where nearly everyone closes. Two practical readings follow. In a metro, if Saturday is a day patients in your area search, the open listings are taking those searches, and a few Saturday hours may be worth more than a few weekday ones. In a small city, the weekday order largely survives the weekend, so Saturday hours are a service decision more than a search one. Either way, list the hours you keep: a listing that says open when nobody answers costs more than a lower position.

Limits: what this can and cannot tell you

  • Two days, two times. We compared one Thursday morning with one Saturday late morning, from one location setting per city. The time gap is a known difference between the two searches; we checked that it did not move any practice between the open and closed groups, but it may have changed other things we did not measure.
  • Range restriction. Every matched practice was in the top 20 on Thursday. A practice outside the top 20 may gain or lose differently.
  • Open or Saturday? We cannot separate the open-at-search signal from anything else Google changes on a weekend. The small-city result, where the list held, is consistent with the open signal mattering only when there are open competitors to promote.
  • Small groups. The small-city open group is 9 practices. Its direction matches the metros, and its size is a lead, not a finding.
  • Not measured. Calls, bookings and clicks. A lower Saturday position is a visibility cost, not a measured patient cost. We also did not measure Sunday or whether positions return on Monday.

The number to write down

Closed on Saturday, the median metro practice in the top 20 drops 3 places on Saturday morning; open, it gains 4. In a small city where nearly everyone closes, the closed practice loses a median of 1 place and usually keeps a top-three spot.
