Does closing on Friday cost a dentist their Google Maps spot? 366 practices, Thursday against Friday

We searched the same 22 cities for a dentist on a Thursday and again on Friday at the same hour. Practices closed all of Friday fell a median of 2 places, 7 in large metros, while practices that were open moved up.

Ultimate Analytics

Dentists who keep a four-day week hear one warning more than any other: Google favors a listing that is open when someone searches, so a practice that closes on Friday hands its spot in the map pack to a competitor every Friday. Yesterday we published a reading of the hours on 430 dental listings and found the four-day week is common: 170 of the 426 practices showing hours in the Google Maps top 20 list Friday as closed. A snapshot like that cannot test the warning, because on a Thursday nearly everyone is open.

So we searched again. On Friday, October 9, 2026 we ran the identical search, “dentist” plus the city, in the same 22 cities (11 large metros and 11 small cities), within four minutes of the same time of day as Thursday’s: about 8 a.m. Central and 9 a.m. Eastern. Then we matched every practice to itself across the two days by name and map pin. 366 practices were in the top 20 both days.

The warning held, and the effect is large enough to see without statistics. Practices closed for all of Friday moved down. Practices open on Friday moved up into the space.

Your benchmark

If your practice closes on Friday, search “dentist” and your city on a Thursday morning and again on Friday at the same hour, and write down your position both days. Here is how the 366 matched practices moved:

Friday status at the search Practices Median move Moved down Moved up Median position Thursday Median position Friday
Closed all of Friday 120 down 2 90 13 9 12
Closed, but opening later Friday 13 up 2 2 9 13 12
Open at the search 230 up 1 29 140 9 8

Three in four practices closed all of Friday moved down (75 percent). Of the practices open at the search, 13 percent moved down. Measured as a rank correlation between being closed at the search and the change in position, rho was 0.533 across 363 practices with listed hours, a strong relationship by any convention we use.

In a metro, it is seven places

The size of the drop depends on how many competitors close with you.

Large metros Small cities
Listings closed at Friday’s search 33 of 213 105 of 210
Practices closed all Friday, matched both days 22 98
Median move down 7 down 2
Moved down 19 71
Moved up 0 13
Median position Thursday, then Friday 5, then 14 10, then 12

In the metros, few practices close on Friday, so the ones that do fall behind a long line of open competitors. The 22 metro practices closed all of Friday sat at a median position of 5 on Thursday and 14 on Friday, and not one of them moved up. In the small cities half the list was closed at the search, so a closed practice is mostly ranked against other closed practices and loses less ground: a median of 2 places.

The top three is where it shows

On Thursday, 19 of the 66 top-three slots across the 22 cities were held by practices whose listings say they close on Friday. On Friday, 5 were. Of those 19 practices, 6 kept a top-three spot and the median one sat at position 4. Of the 47 top-three practices open on Friday, 45 kept their spot. No top-three practice from Thursday fell out of the top 20 on Friday, whatever its hours.

The bottom of the list turned over too. 64 Thursday listings were gone from the top 20 on Friday, and 49 of them list Friday as closed. None of the 64 had been in the top three and 8 had been in the top ten. In their place, 63 listings appeared, and 55 of those were open at the search.

It is not reviews

The practices that close on Friday carry fewer reviews: a median of 355 on Thursday, against 648 for the practices open on Friday. Reviews are the strongest ladder on this list, so we split the matched practices into thirds by review count and looked inside each third. Closed-all-day practices moved down in all three thirds: a median of 2 places among those with fewer than 361 reviews, 3 among those with 361 up to 738, and 2 among those with 738 or more, where 12 of 15 moved down and none moved up. Open practices moved up in each third. 119 of the 120 closed-all-day practices are independents, so this is not a brand effect either.

Closed all day versus not open yet

The most useful detail is the smallest group. 13 practices were closed at the moment of the Friday search but open later that day, because they start later in the morning. Those 13 moved up, a median of 2 places, with only 2 moving down. Being closed at the minute of the search did not cost them. Being closed for the whole day did.

The reverse direction points the same way. On Thursday, 32 practices were closed at the search, nearly all because they open later in the morning. 30 of them were still in the top 20 on Friday, and 25 of those moved up, a median of 4 places. The 8 that were open at the Friday search rose the most, a median of 8 places. We read this as a lead, not a finding: it rests on small groups, and the 11 that were closed all of Friday also rose a median of 3, which says the full mechanism is more than open or closed.

What changed in verification

The first pass reported one figure for closed at search, 133 practices moving down a median of 2. Reading the rows showed it mixed two groups that moved in opposite directions, practices closed all day and practices opening later, so the engine now reports them apart. We also checked every listing that appeared on only one day for a listing at the same map pin under another name, and found none. Columbus changed 9 of its 20 Thursday listings between the two days, all of them open on Friday by their hours: that is the ordinary day-to-day churn of the list, and the open group above measures it.

What to do with this

If you close Fridays, you lose Friday ground, and you get it back. Every Thursday top-three practice stayed in the top 20. The question for the practice is how much new-patient searching happens on Friday mornings in your market, and whether sitting a few places lower on that one morning matters to your schedule. In a metro the answer is more likely yes. In a small city where half your competitors also close, the cost is about two places. Do not list hours you do not keep: the listing has to describe the practice patients will reach.

Limits: what this can and cannot tell you

  • Two mornings. We measured one Thursday and one Friday, at one hour, from one location setting per city. We did not measure Friday afternoon, Saturday, or whether positions return on Monday.
  • Range restriction. Every practice here was already in the top 20 on Thursday. A practice outside the top 20 may gain or lose differently.
  • Open or Friday? We cannot separate the open-at-search signal from anything else Google changes between a Thursday and a Friday. The practices opening later on Friday, which rose, are the best evidence that the signal is the hours, and they are 13 practices.
  • Matching. Practices were matched by name and map pin. A practice that renamed its listing overnight would count as one that left and one that arrived; we found none.
  • Not measured. Calls, bookings and clicks. A lower Friday position is a visibility cost, not a measured patient cost.

The number to write down

Closed all of Friday, the median practice in the top 20 drops 2 places on a Friday morning, and 7 in a large metro. Open, it gains 1. The full dataset, including every practice’s Thursday and Friday position, is below.
