Does closing Saturday cost an HVAC contractor its Google Maps spot? 370 contractors, Saturday vs Tuesday
We searched 22 cities on a Saturday and again on a Tuesday morning and matched 370 HVAC contractors. Those closed all Saturday rose 2 places; open ones still closed on Tuesday fell 4.
Three days ago we published a Saturday snapshot of 407 HVAC contractors in the Google Maps top 20 across 22 cities. The 69 contractors that were closed for the whole day sat at a median position of 13 against 9 for the ones open at the moment of the search, and in small cities the gap was five places. The advice that follows from it is familiar: a contractor that closes on weekends gives up its spot every weekend, so list long hours and answer the phone.
The snapshot could not say whether that was the day, the minute or the business. Contractors that close on Saturday are also smaller, with a median of 66 reviews against 384 for the rest. So we searched again. On Tuesday, October 20, 2026 we ran the same search, “hvac repair” plus the city, in the same 11 large metros and 11 small cities, and matched every contractor to its Saturday listing by Google place id. 370 were in the top 20 on both days.
The result is more specific than the belief. The contractors closed all Saturday came back up, but only by a median of 2 places. The contractors open on Saturday gave up places only if they were closed when we searched on Tuesday. The penalty follows the status at the minute of the search, not the contractor.
Your benchmark
If your shop closes on Saturday, search “hvac repair” and your city on a Saturday and again on a weekday, and write down your position both times. Here is how the 370 matched contractors moved, grouped by what their listing showed on Saturday:
| Saturday status | Matched | Median move by Tuesday | Median position Saturday, then Tuesday |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closed all day Saturday | 68 | up 2 | 13, then 10 |
| Open at the Saturday search | 294 | no change | 8, then 9 |
| Open Saturday and open Tuesday | 248 | no change | 9, then 8 |
| Open Saturday, closed at the Tuesday search | 46 | down 4 | 8, then 13 |
Our Tuesday search ran at 10:42 UTC, which is 6:42 in the morning Eastern and 5:42 Central. At that hour 142 of the 412 listings, 34 percent, were closed and due to open later, and none was closed for the whole day. The Saturday search ran at 20:46 UTC, 61 hours earlier.
Closed on Saturday: a 2-place recovery
The 68 contractors closed all Saturday rose from a median position of 13 to 10. 52 moved up, 5 moved down and 11 did not move. On independents alone, 67 contractors, the median move was the same 2 places. Across all 370 matched contractors the correlation between being closed on Saturday and moving up was -0.39, a moderate relationship.
Their Tuesday standing needs a second look. 64 of the 68 were still closed, waiting for their opening time, when we searched at 5:42 Central. Those 64 rose a median of 2 places to position 11. The 4 that were open by then rose a median of 11 places, from 10 to 4. The recovery was real but small while the doors were shut, and large for the few that were open.
Market size changes the size of it, as the Saturday snapshot found:
| Large metros | Small cities | |
|---|---|---|
| Closed all Saturday, matched | 10 | 58 |
| Median move | up 4 | up 1 |
| Moved up, moved down | 8, 1 | 44, 4 |
| Median position Saturday, then Tuesday | 10, then 8 | 13, then 11 |
| Open Saturday, closed at the Tuesday search | 25 | 21 |
| Median move | down 4 | down 2 |
| Correlation, closed Saturday and move | -0.26 | -0.547 |
The metro group is 10 contractors, too few to rest anything on beyond direction. The small-city group is 58, 44 of whom moved up. Inside review thirds the Saturday-closed contractors rose a median of 1 place among the 40 with under 120 reviews, 2 among the 21 with 120 to 665, and 6 among the 7 with 666 or more.
The penalty moved to whoever was closed
The 46 contractors that were open on Saturday and closed when we searched on Tuesday fell a median of 4 places, from 8 to 13. 44 fell and none rose. They were not small shops: their median Saturday review count was 318. The 248 that were open at both searches did not move at all as a group, 85 up and 76 down and 87 unchanged.
So the gap the Saturday snapshot found did not leave the list. It changed owners. On Tuesday morning the 142 contractors closed at the search sat at a median position of 13 with a median of 112 reviews, and the 270 open ones sat at 9 with 400. On Saturday it was 13 against 9. Nine of the 66 top-three slots belonged to contractors closed at the Tuesday search, against 2 closed for the day and 1 opening later on Saturday.
That reads as a signal about the minute, with the day as one way to be closed at the minute. The Saturday-closed contractors were closed for the day and sat low. On Tuesday they were closed for an hour and sat low, though two places higher. The Saturday-open contractors were closed for an hour and fell to the same place.
Who stayed and who left
Of the 66 contractors in Saturday’s top three, 56 were still in it on Tuesday and none left the top 20. The 37 that left the list entirely came from the bottom of Saturday’s list, a median Saturday position of 17, and 2 of them had been inside the top ten. The 42 that arrived landed at a median position of 18, and 24 of the 42 were closed at the search. That is ordinary turnover at the foot of a Maps list, and it was not tied to the day’s status.
Johnson City and Wausau each had 13 listings closed at the Tuesday search and Detroit had 10. Columbus and Chicago had 2.
What changed in verification
The screen was the Saturday screen, unchanged, so the two days compare: 28 of 440 results were excluded, 18 of them listings with a coined name, the trade and a city, no website and a handful of reviews, 6 keyword names on template sites, 2 generic city-plus-trade names and 2 equipment suppliers, each with its reason.
Reading every kept listing under 30 reviews found 8 more on Tuesday’s list that look like suppliers or listings we could not confirm as businesses: three with supply in the name and five with 1 or 2 reviews and no business website, two of those pointing to the same area guide site in Wausau. 4 of the 8 were in the matched set. We left them in so the screen matches Saturday’s, and dropped them to test: the closed-Saturday median stayed at a 2-place rise, and the open-Saturday median stayed at no change.
What to do with this
- Closing Saturday costs you the Saturday search, not the week. The closed group sits low on the days it is closed and comes back, by a median of 2 places here.
- The list rewards the door being open when the search happens. Open Saturday did not protect a contractor that had not opened yet on Tuesday morning: those fell 4 places. If your listed opening hour is later than your competitors’, your listing sits lower in the early hours, every day.
- Check your own hours against the pack at the hour that matters. Search at 7 in the morning and count how many of the 20 say Closed and Opens later.
Limits: what this can and cannot tell you
Measured: position, review count, listed hours and open status of HVAC contractor listings in the Google Maps top 20 for one query in 22 cities, on one Saturday afternoon and one Tuesday morning, matched by place id and repeated on independents and inside review thirds.
Not measured: a Tuesday search at the Saturday hour. The two searches differ in both day and hour, 4:46 PM Eastern against 6:42 AM, so the recovery of the Saturday-closed group is a mixture of a new day and an early hour. A weekday afternoon search is the clean version. Calls and booked jobs were not measured either.
Range restriction: every contractor here was in the top 20 on Saturday. The study cannot say whether closing Saturday keeps a contractor off the list.
Other explanations: the 68 Saturday-closed contractors are smaller than average, and the 7 in the most reviewed third are too few to read. Listed hours are the hours the owner typed in, not the hours the shop keeps. Google changes its results between any two days for reasons we cannot see.
The number to write down
Closed all Saturday, the median HVAC contractor in the top 20 came back up 2 places on Tuesday, and the contractors that were open on Saturday but not yet open on Tuesday morning gave up 4. The dataset, with every contractor’s Saturday and Tuesday position, is below.
