Do chiropractors with longer hours rank higher in Google Maps? 438 listings in 22 cities
The hours on 438 chiropractor listings in the Google Maps top 20 across 22 cities: the median practice is open 38 hours over 5 days, 40 percent close midday, and none of it sorts the list once reviews are held constant.
Chiropractors run some of the most irregular weeks in local healthcare: a two-hour lunch closure, a Friday morning only, no Wednesdays. The advice they hear is that the Google Maps pack punishes it. A practice open five full days, through lunch, into the evening and on Saturday is supposed to sit above one that closes midday or takes an afternoon off, because Google favors the listing that is open when people search.
We tested it against the list. On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 9:32 in the morning Eastern, we captured the Google Maps top 20 for “chiropractor” in 22 US cities, 11 large metros and 11 small cities, and read the weekly hours under every listing. Two listings filed as medical or pain clinics were excluded, 438 chiropractic listings remained, and 420 of them, 96 percent, show a full week of hours.
The irregular week is the norm, and it costs nothing visible. The median practice in a top 20 is open 38 hours over 5 days. 40 percent close in the middle of the day on at least one weekday, 55 percent keep at least one half day, 27 percent are closed on a weekday, and 27 percent open on Saturday. The top three keep the same week: 27 of the 66 top-three listings close midday, 30 keep a half day, 16 take a weekday off and 16 open Saturday.
Your benchmark
Search “chiropractor” and your city in Google Maps and read the hours under the 20 listings. Here is how the 420 practices with hours split, with where each group sits:
| Week shape (420 listings with hours) | Share | Median position | In the top three | Median reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Closes midday on at least one day | 40% | 10 | 27 of 66 | 167 |
| Keeps at least one half day (under 5 hours) | 55% | 11 | 30 of 66 | 131 |
| Closed on a weekday | 27% | 11 | 16 of 66 | 123 |
| Open at 6 PM or later on at least one day | 77% | 11 | 50 of 66 | 166 |
| Open on Saturday | 27% | 11 | 16 of 66 | 221 |
| Closed on Friday | 15% | 9 | 14 of 66 | 157 |
Half of the list is open 5 days, 20 percent 4 days, 19 percent 6 days and 4 percent all 7. The four-day practices sit at a median position of 9 and hold 16 top-three slots; the seven-day practices sit at 11. Friday is the day that goes: 64 practices close it entirely and 120 more work a half day, so 44 percent of the list is gone by Friday afternoon. The practices closed all of Friday sit at a median position of 9, one place above the practices that are open.
Hours per week
The one hours measure that reached significance was the weekly total. The top three are open a median 41 hours against 37 at positions 13 to 20, and across 420 listings the correlation between hours and position is -0.116, weak but significant. It does not survive the review count. Split the sample into thirds by reviews and the correlation is -0.101 in the least reviewed third, -0.024 in the middle and 0 in the most reviewed, none significant, while the median week runs 36, 36 and 41 hours across the same thirds. Longer weeks belong to practices with more reviews, and reviews are what track position.
Half days read the other way, weakly: in the metros, practices with a half day sit at 12 against 10 with a correlation of 0.147, significant on 217 listings, but inside review thirds it is 0.104, 0.166 and 0.144, none significant, so it is a lead, not a finding. Days open, Friday hours, evenings and midday closures showed no relationship to position in any group we cut.
The two kinds of market keep different weeks, so here they are split.
| Large metros | Small cities | |
|---|---|---|
| Listings with hours | 217 | 203 |
| Median hours per week | 40 | 36.5 |
| Open four days | 40 | 47 |
| Open five days | 106 | 114 |
| Closes midday | 83 (38%) | 84 (41%) |
| Closed on a weekday | 51 (24%) | 63 (31%) |
| Open at 6 PM or later | 194 (89%) | 130 (64%) |
| Open on Saturday | 80 (37%) | 32 (16%) |
| Median reviews | 223 | 44 |
| Top-three median reviews | 286 | 246 |
| Hours per week versus position | -0.065 | -0.193 |
In the metros the hours total is unrelated to position. In the small cities it is significant, and on the 165 independent, practice-named listings with hours it is -0.249. It lives in one place: among the 55 small-city practices with 1 to 32 reviews the correlation is -0.403, significant, against -0.212 and -0.137 in the two more reviewed thirds, not significant. The small-city practices at the bottom of the list have both few reviews and short listed weeks, and this design cannot say which of the two Google is reading.
The second listing
Reading every listing under 30 reviews found the finding we did not design for. 38 of the 438 listings, 9 percent, are named for a person rather than a practice, a title ending in DC or beginning with Dr., and 35 of them are in the small cities, where they are 16 percent of the list. They sit at a median position of 18, carry a median of 6 reviews, 17 show no website link, 10 show no hours, and 1 of them is in a top three. 28 of the 38 share a street address with another listing in the same list, usually the clinic the doctor works in.
Count the addresses, not the pins. 64 listings, 15 percent, share a street address with another listing in their list; in the small cities it is 60 listings, 28 percent, and 9 of the 11 small cities had at least one. The median small-city pack holds 18 distinct addresses, and the thinnest held 13: there, 12 of 19 listings shared an address with another. Where a clinic and its doctor both appear, the practice-named listing sits at a median position of 8 with 46 reviews and the person-named one at 18 with 5. The doctor’s listing is not taking a second slot near the top; it is filling the bottom of the list, which is why a person-named title correlates with a lower position at 0.468 in the small cities, and 0.506 inside the least reviewed third.
Reviews, again
The shape every Maps study in this series has found held here, more strongly in the small cities than anywhere we have measured. The median listing has 135 reviews, the median top-three listing 271 and positions 13 to 20 carry 65. Rank against reviews is -0.408 across 434 rated listings, -0.262 in the metros and -0.684 in the small cities, where positions 1 to 3 carry 246 reviews and positions 13 to 20 carry 14. The top three carry 1.44 times their own market’s median listing in a metro and 4.74 times in a small city. The least reviewed top-three listing in the median market has 136 reviews, 93 in the small cities.
Rating sorts nothing: the median is 4.9, the correlation with position 0.047, and 48 percent of rated listings show a 5.0. Chains are a small part of this list: 41 locations, 9 percent, 9 of 66 top-three slots, and one national franchise accounts for 24 of them across 15 cities. Chain status and position are unrelated at -0.063.
One lead: open at the moment of the search
We searched at 9:32 Eastern, when 310 of the 422 listings with an open state, 73 percent, were open. Open listings sat at a median position of 9 against 12, 58 of the 66 top-three listings were open, and the correlation is -0.132, significant, -0.197 on independents, holding in the least and most reviewed thirds at -0.182 and -0.192. The 102 listings closed at that minute but opening later sat at 12; the 10 closed all Wednesday sat at 15. As with dentists and salons in this series, open-now is the one hours signal that goes the belief’s way, and a morning search cannot say what happens at noon, when 40 percent of this list is closed for lunch.
What changed in verification
The first pass tagged 35 chain locations. Reading the hosts seen in two of our cities and the named regional brands added a multi-office injury clinic chain, a national disc-treatment network, a regional group and a franchise network, and removed one clinic a brand phrase had matched on a single word; 41 locations remain. The person-named tag and the shared-address count were added after reading every listing under 30 reviews, and the rule ships with the dataset. Every hours figure was recomputed on the 351 independent, practice-named listings with hours: the median week is 37.5 hours against 38 for the whole list, 39 percent close midday, 58 percent keep a half day, 23 percent open Saturday, and no hours measure reached significance inside review thirds on that group either.
What to do with this
- Keep the lunch closure and the half day if they are how you practice. 40 and 55 percent of your competitors do, and the top three do at the same rate.
- A four-day week is not disqualifying. 87 of 420 practices keep one, at a median position of 9.
- Count the addresses in your pack, not the listings. In a small city a quarter of the slots can be a second listing for an office already on the list.
- List a full week of hours, and if you open early, say so. Open at the moment of the search was the one hours signal that went the belief’s way.
- Spend the effort on reviews. In a small city the top three carry 4.74 times the market’s median listing.
Limits: what this can and cannot tell you
Measured: the listed weekly hours, open state at the moment of the search, review counts, ratings, titles, addresses and positions of 438 chiropractor listings in the Google Maps top 20 for one query in 22 cities on one Wednesday morning, with every comparison repeated on independents, on practice-named listings and inside review thirds.
Not measured: searches at lunchtime, in the evening or on a Saturday, when the open-now mechanism would operate against a large part of the list. Whether listed hours match the hours the front desk keeps. Whether a person-named listing was created by the practice or by Google.
Range restriction: every practice here already appears in the top 20. The study can say whether a longer week sorts the list, not whether a short-week practice with few reviews is kept off the list in the first place.
Other explanations: the practices with longer weeks carry more reviews, and review volume is the one measured factor that tracks position; this design cannot separate the two. The small-city hours result sits in the least reviewed third, where listed hours and listing completeness travel together. Websites were not read for this study.
The number to write down
The median chiropractor in a map pack is open 38 hours over 5 days, 40 percent close for lunch, 55 percent keep a half day, and the top three keep the same week with 271 reviews. Read the hours in your own pack, keep the week you can staff, count the addresses, and put the time into reviews.
